Safe Vacation Tips

While vacation can be a fun time for you and your family, it’s important to remember to be safe. Whether you’re leaving the country or just leaving town, you need to be sure you follow the proper safe vacation tips to avoid problems along the way. Before you ever leave your home, you need to first plan for your safety and the safety of your children or family that will be coming along.

Here are some safe vacation tips:

 Travel as light as possible. You will want to be able to watch over your luggage at all times and the more you have, the more difficult it will be to keep track of it.
 Label all luggage properly with your name, address and telephone number. If you do lose your luggage in an airport or other travel area, someone can call you to let you know.
 When waiting in airports, train stations, hotels and other areas, always keep your luggage as close to you as possible.
 Always keep your luggage locked. This makes a thief much less likely to take it.
 Keep your purse close to your body, under your arm or criss-crossed along your front, not loosely on your side. Never leave your purse just lying around.
 Keep your wallet in your front pocket or jacket pocket instead of the back pocket of your pants where it can most easily be stolen.
 Carry traveler’s checks instead of cash or credit cards.
 Don’t take expensive or sentimental jewelry with you on vacation. Many people carry replicas of their expensive wedding rings or just leave them at home for the trip.
 Photocopy all important documents such as ID and passports in case they are stolen. You will have the photocopies to show who you are.
 Don’t flash money or valuables around.
 Get maps or a tour guide and know where you are in unfamiliar cities.
 Let friends or family know you are leaving so they can keep an eye on your home.
 Let your security company know the dates you are out of town so if there is an alarm from your home, they know to take it seriously.
 Put your lights on a timer to make it look like someone is still in the home while you are away.
 If you’re going to be gone more than just a couple of days, put a hold on your mail and newspaper delivery so they don’t pile up and indicate no one is home.

When you take the proper vacation safety measures, you can have a fun, relaxed trip. While some things could still happen anyway, it greatly reduces your risk when you plan ahead.
